City: Book One: Singular Assumptions by Michael Boughn

Details

PRE-ORDER NOW. PUBLICATION DATE OCTOBER 2014.

Taking Charles Olson's "Poem 143—the festival aspect" as its provocation and partner in conversation, Michael Boughn's City sets out on a voyage to explore the Three Towns central to Olson's poem and the Vedic myth that it responds to. Combining observations and commentary on current affairs with references to and considerations of traditional texts by Dante, Augustine, Fra Carnevale, Weber, Bachelard, Whitehead, Benjamin, Agamben, and a host of others, City weaves multiple threads together into a tapestry of urban experience that is always both here and beyond.

Book One: Singular Assumptions opens the journey with a tour of the first town's charms and attractions—a map that moves from bar to arena through a perennial traffic jam, while taking in the occasional parade and other digressions that only the City, with its infinite possibilities, can offer up.

Bunny and Shark by Alisha Piercy

Details

49th Shelf Most-Anticipated 2014 Fall Fiction Preview Selection

From award-winning author Alisha Piercy comes Bunny and Shark , a middle-aged coming-of-age story-cum-shark-adventure that reveals and celebrates women's power in the trenches. Plunging into the first thirteen days after the 'bastard' pushes his ex-Playboy wife 'Bunny' over a cliff in the Caribbean, Bunny and Shark is a fable about island survival, and the perils and potentials of being exiled from one's identity.
Literally lost at sea, Bunny is fueled by the miracle of having been saved from sharks by a band of dolphins. And her continued survival depends on her ability to become a spiritual extension of the landscape: she is the mood of the ocean at night as she swims blindly in it, and the protective coolness of the jungle by day as she recovers from a loss of limb; the close-walled refuge of the sailboats anchored in the harbour, and the sparkling deck of an opulent superyacht when, transformed, she makes a triumphant return to her former world.
Introducing one of the great heroines of contemporary fiction, Bunny and Shark takes readers on a voyage intense with abandon and illumination, in a story that invokes more than a little bit of magic in the telling.

Sophrosyne by Marianne Apostolides

Details

49th Shelf Most-Anticipated 2014 Fall Fiction Preview Selection

Because fear can transform into confidence, recklessness, the kind of power you can't imagine until you're inside it. And then, once you've felt it, you can't feel alive when it's gone. Sophrosyne. You understood this feeling. I know you did, though you never said it. I saw it, instead, on your face when you danced.

Sophrosyne is one of only four virtues identified by Socrates - four traits which, if lived deeply, define who we are as human beings. But sophrosyne is a concept our culture has long forgotten. "Self-restraint,' 'self-control,' 'modesty,' 'temperance' - none of these terms expresses the essence of the word.

In this provocative new novel about desire and restraint in a digital age by acclaimed author Marianne Apostolides, 21-year-old Alex is consumed by the elusive problem of sophrosyne for reasons he cannot share with others. While Alex's philosophy professor believes studying it will help shed light on the malaise of our era, Alex hopes it will release him from his darkly disturbing relationship with his mother. As he attempts to uncover his mother's truth, Alex is drawn inside an amorphous, indefinable undercurrent of love and violation. Only through his lover, Meiko, does Alex open into a new understanding of sophrosyne, with all its implications.

Reminiscent of Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red, Sophrosyne asks readers to surrender themselves to the book's logic and language. Infused with a sensuality balanced by its intellect, Sophrosyne reads like "the music's rhythm... soft like wax and supple, warm," pulsing through your veins.

Universal Bureau of Copyrights by Bertrand Laverdure, Translated by Oana Avasilichioaei

Details

PRE-ORDER NOW. PUBLICATION DATE OCTOBER 2014.

From celebrated Quebecois author Bertrand Laverdure comes Universal Bureau of Copyrights, a bold, strange and addictive story that envisions a world where free will doesn't exist, and an enigmatic global corporation buys and sells the copyrights for all things on Earth, including real and fictional characters. Through this novel, which is part poetic narrative, part sci-fi-dystopian fantasy, readers become acquainted with the main character, a man who deconstructs himself as he navigates the mystifying passages of the story. Having no control over his environment, time continuum, or body, he is a puppet on strings, an icon in a video game and, as he eventually discovers within the bowels of the Universal Bureau of Copyrights, the object of countless copyrights. With touches of Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions and Sterne's Tristram Shandy, Universal Bureau of Copyrights packs a multitude of modern cultural references into an audacious exploration of identity and one's place in the world.

Secession / Insecession by Chus Pato and Erin Moure (ePub eBook - Digital Download)

Details

ePub eBook - Digital Download

Secession / Insecession is a homage to the acts of reading, writing and translating poetry. In it, Chus Pato’s Galician biopoetics of poet and nation, Secession – translated by Erín Moure – joins Moure’s Canadian translational biopoetics, Insecession. To Pato, the poem is an insurrection against normalized language; to Moure, translation itself disrupts and reforms poetics and the possibility of the poem. In solidarity with Pato, Moure echoes Barthes: “A readerly text is something I cannot re-produce (today I cannot write like Atwood); a writerly text is one I can read only if I utterly transform my reading regime. I now recognize a third text alongside the readerly and the writerly: let's call it the untranslatable.”

THESEUS: A Collaboration bpNichol and Wayne Clifford (PDF eBook + Print Version Bundle)

Details

PDF eBook + Print Version Bundle

The value of Theseus is as much about its pedigree as the writing itself. The collaboration for this new book began in the autumn of 1966. bpNichol and Wayne Clifford had worked together early in their literary careers; in fact, Clifford had been the editor of Nichol's first trade book, published with Coach House Press. To begin, Nichol had also wanted to include two West Coast poets in the writing process. This didn't work out, so Nichol and Clifford rewrote a section to produce Part One of the present text. Part Two was composed over many years of revisiting and revising. These long gestation periods allowed the writers the space and time to re/consider, knowing the text would always be there to augment.

Here In There by Angela Carr (PDF eBook + Print Bundle)

Details

PDF eBook + Print Bundle

Here in There, Angela Carr's third book of poetry, is a lyrical petition to the human faculty of attention. In constant motion, the poems locate unusual instances of connection. They ask, do we give or pay attention? And what do we attend to? How do we decide what merits our attention? In a world where stillness is elusive, can we give or pay attention to anything but that which outlives our own distraction? Turning our attention to the senses, in Here in There, touch informs inscription, credit becomes an audible vibration. Carr's poems form traceable and untraceable patterns, disappearing economies of material.
