BookThug Submission Guidelines:
BookThug publishes innovative and contemporary poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction and critical texts.
We do not publish genre fiction (mystery, science fiction, historical romance), cookbooks, or self-help books.
Please note that we do not accept manuscripts sent by email or fax.
BookThug maintains fairly rigorous aesthetics in regards to its publishing program and if you are unsure whether your writing is a good fit for us,
we recommend that you first take some time to familiarize yourself with the books we have published to determine if your book is a good fit and if
we are the press to approach. Even reading some BookThug publications prior to submitting is recommended and goes the extra mile to let us know that
you support what we do.
While we do welcome unsolicited manuscripts in our areas of interest, if you are unsure if we are the press to approach, we encourage you to query us prior to submitting your manuscript for consideration. To do this, mail or email us a complete description of your book along with a short sample before sending us the complete manuscript. For fiction or non-fiction titles, include no more than one chapter, and for poetry include no more than 8-10 poems. If we are not interested, we will let you know as soon as possible. If we are interested in seeing the complete manuscript, we will also let you know.

What to Send:
- Ensure that your manuscript is typed, double-spaced with single-sided pages.

- Please include an introductory letter that describes your work and in which you compare your work to two BookThug titles.
- Please include a literary CV that lists your publication history.
- If you would like your manuscript back, please enclose a large enough self-addressed envelope with sufficient pre-paid postage. If you don't want your manuscript returned, please include a note giving us permission to recycle or destroy it if we aren't interested in it.
- Make sure to tell us if it is a multiple submission. If your manuscript is accepted for publication elsewhere prior to hearing back from us, please ensure that you contact us to inform us of this immediately so that we can remove your proposal from the pile. This courtesy saves everyone a lot of time.
When to send your manuscript:
We receive many manuscripts for consideration each year. We publish 12 books a year, 6 per season (spring and fall).
Please note that we only receive and read submissions between December 1-March 31 each year. Submissions that are postmarked after
March 31 will be ignored until the next reading cycle begins.
What to keep in mind:
- We do our very best to give your manuscript the proper attention during our reading period. We appreciate you being patient, so please do not call or email us to check on the status of your proposal. If your manuscript arrives during our reading period, you should hear back from us in 4-6 months.
- If you wish for us to acknowledge receipt of your submission, please include a note along with your manuscript requesting this and we will send you a confirmation email.
